Poet Stream Beta Test is up

Fri Apr 17, 2009, 4:39 AM
In my previous journal entry: [link] , I kicked off my invitations to select photographers to collaborate with me on Poet Stream.

I've uploaded the beta version to my dennislandi.com domain, so check it out: [link]

Once I am satisfied that everything is working properly, I will uploaded it to poetstream.com and it will go live. This site should work properly on the latest versions of IE, Firefox and Chrome.

A few more words about this. As you can see the art content (images and poems) are a bit top-heavy with my own work. That was only necessary to kick-start the site.

The next anthology (I hope) will contain much more of *your* stuff and less of my stuff.

Love.

Poet Stream Collaboration

Thu Apr 2, 2009, 12:55 AM
Hello, my name is Dennis Landi. The best way to reach me is my email address at: dennis [at] dennislandi [dot] [com]

PoetStream.com is an Arts Project, implementing the collaboration of poetry and photography around a Zen sensibility, hence the poetry format is Haiku, and the associated photo should compliment that sensibility. In addition to Poetstream being an "Art" site, it has a secondary fund raising goal for Environmental and Ecological causes. Since this is the U.N. "Year of the Gorilla" (there are, for instance, only approx. 700 Mountain Gorillas left in the world), our first fund raising goal will be for Mountain Gorilla aid organizations. In this context, Poetstream will work in close collaboration with another site that I am launching: Ecology Overview (ecologyoverview.org). Poetstream Fundraising will take the form of publishing "art books" and calendars from time to time.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Poetstream.com site is not launched yet (as of April 3rd, 2009) and is still in design mode.

As I am launching Poetstream.com, I am still figuring the best way to communicate with a large number of people for whom I may or may not have their email address... yet. (Note: for those of you who do choose to collaborate with Poetstream.com, an email address would be very nice to have...)

I think the most efficient way I can come up with in the least amount of time is to make this journal post and invite all of you to read it. So if you are reading this, it is because I have probably invited you to participate in the Poetstream collaborative effort as either a poet, photographer, or both.

So first of here is a link to the preliminary website design, where you can check out the "home", "submit" and "about" pages.

[link]

Also, I've invited certain photographers to collaborate with me to get this site launched.

Dear photographers, please have a look at the links indicated by your name to have a look at the results of the collaboration. Please note that in all case (including my own photos) I had to crop and sometimes rotate the image to fit the design of the site (you will see what I mean). However, at all times I attempt to adhere to a high level of aesthetics. In all cases, I would appreciate it if you could send me a version of your image that is bigger than 1600x1200 pixels, so I can work with it at the proper resolution without any improper stretching. In that sense, you should view your images below, as "prototypes" until you send me larger versions.

In all cases I will give full attribution to all artists (poets and/or photographers) by linking to their preferred URL (could be deviantArt or your own website). If I do not already have your full name, email address, and website (when available) please let me have it. You can email me directly with that info (dennis [at] dennislandi [dot] [com]).

The following collaborative art-works all follow the same design; The image and text is embedded in a flash file so that the the text need not be rasterized (and so remains vectorized fonts), allowing the text to remain clear at varying screen resolutions and browser window sizes. You can experiment with different screen resolutions or browser window (resize your browser) to see what I mean.

Using my Prints Gallery Effectively

Sat Mar 28, 2009, 5:11 PM
Here are instructions on how to effectively use my print gallery. These instructions are mainly aimed at Americans living in New Delhi.

Notice the thumbnail images. If you click on any of the images you will go to a page displaying a larger image.

On each image's page you will notice a "Buy this Print" button. Click on one of these buttons to be taking to my Print Store. Notice that in addition to photo prints of varying sizes (and prices) you will see, that some images also have mugs, Greeting Cards, Postcards, Mouse-pads, puzzles, refrigerator magnets, etc.

If you wish to order a photo print I recommend going with the "Luster" paper option. To choose this option click on the menu item (Matte) to see that there are other options available. Choose Luster. Its a nice combination of the glossiness of "Glossy" with some of the robustness of "Matte" paper.

When ordering a print, be sure to indicate "no frame, just the print!" From my experience, the prints are of excellent quality but the frames are cheap and the "glass" is plastic and both the frame and "glass" can crack during shipment. Whereas, when you order just the print, it is shipped in a super tough photo tube and always arrives safely in my experience.

Prices: For Prints that I am sharing with the community, all prices are just the cost of printing plus the small service fee that DeviantArt charges for the service. I have added no additional charge and reap no profit from this. Enjoy! (Note: My Fine Art Prints are noticeably more expensive, and you should easily be able to tell one from the other. Most of my community prints are photos...)

Slide-show:
Let's go back to the Thumbnail Gallery at the link I gave you above. Notice that at the top of the gallery thumbnail images is a "sit back" button. Pressing this button will start up the slide-show. Notice that you can maximize the slide-show window to fill your screen. Do so. Now notice that button with the four arrows pointing outward from the center. Pressing this button will cause the slide-show to fill as much of the screen as it can. Try it.

Downloading Print Images:
When you view a particular image from the gallery, you will notice a "download" button on the left-hand side of the image. This is the actual Print-size image that you can download directly to your computer. Once you have it on your computer, you can send it to your own print service (if you are here in Delhi) if you wish or print it out on your own photo printer if you have one.

********IMPORTANT NOTE *********
One last note about order prints from India: Use the Paypal option, as the major credit cards seem to block deviantArt orders from India, but PayPal has always worked for me. This means that you will have to set up a Paypal account... [link]

As for shipping options. DeviantArt will ship it via DHL right to AES or the U.S. Embassy. Or you can get someone at the embassy to order the print shipped to the State Dept address, if you have such a contact.... I've done it both ways. The DHL direct way is much faster...
